Intense pulsed light is a powerful, noninvasive solution for sun damage, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, hair removal, and rosacea, along with many other skin care issues. At Beau MedSpa in Glendale, California, highly trained physician Aaron Jeng, MD, does all the treatments himself after doing a complete personal evaluation to determine your needs and wishes. Intense pulsed light, or IPL, is a cosmetic treatment that uses light pulses rather than directed light like laser treatments. These broad-spectrum light pulses move through your skin to the target area where they transform into heat and begin to work.
IPL can help with many different skin and body concerns, including:
If you have multiple skin concerns, you may opt for photo rejuvenation, also called a photo-facial.
IPL photo rejuvenation, or photo-facial, involves high-intensity light pulses for your entire face. This noninvasive treatment can yield whole-face results and may be a good choice for issues like sun damage and hyperpigmentation. Although photo-facial results aren't as pronounced as laser facial results are, IPL is overall gentler to your skin than a laser.
IPL treatment delivers light directly to the hair roots where the pigment is. The light turns into heat, which shatters the pigment and forces your hair roots into a resting phase. When your hair is in the resting phase, it stays in place but won’t grow anymore.
Eventually, the hair follicles die off due to the heat damage, but your skin shows no signs of damage. IPL affects only the hair roots in the targeted area.
It depends on what the IPL treatment is for, what your treatment goals are, and other factors specific to you. In general, skin treatments usually take anywhere from 2-8 sessions. Hair removal can vary considerably but in general requires about 5-10 treatments.
You schedule sessions around a month apart, which allows time to gauge progress. Dr. Jeng discusses your progress with you, and he can make any treatment changes necessary to help you achieve your desired results.
Both lasers and IPL can be very effective for cosmetic treatments. Lasers use a narrower and more concentrated beam, which means they treat less of an area at once. IPL treatments are usually faster because of the added coverage.
Laser treatments are generally stronger than IPL treatments and may yield more dramatic results. Since IPL is gentler, skin recovery is faster. Dr. Jeng can discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each to help you decide what's right for you.
