Skin Resurfacing Q & A

What is skin resurfacing?

Skin resurfacing, also called laser resurfacing, is a nonsurgical way to rejuvenate your skin. Skin resurfacing can help with many different skin issues at the same time, including:

  • Sun damage
  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Rough texture
  • Poor skin tone
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Loose skin

Dr. Jeng performs skin resurfacing on an outpatient basis at Beau MedSpa. Skin resurfacing can be a great way to get a younger, fresher look without surgery.

Am I a candidate for skin resurfacing?

Most patients who have skin concerns and want laser skin resurfacing qualify for this treatment.

Dr. Jeng uses the Cynosure ICON™ laser for skin resurfacing because it's a proven treatment that works on nearly any skin type. Other skin lasers, particularly older ones, don't work well on the palest or darkest skin tones, but ICON's advanced technology can work for nearly anyone.

How does skin resurfacing work?

Dr. Jeng uses a numbing cream to ensure your comfort during the skin resurfacing procedure. He then uses the handheld treatment wand on your face. The ICON laser sends microbeams of laser energy through the top layers of skin, which causes no damage at all until it gets to your lower layer of the dermis.

The laser beam agitates the dermis, which makes your body start the healing process. This includes sloughing off damaged and dead skin, pushing new unblemished skin up to take its place, and making brand new collagen and elastin to support your skin.

How long does skin resurfacing take?

The skin resurfacing process usually takes anywhere from 30-90 minutes. You'll be able to go home immediately afterward. You may need several treatment sessions to get optimal results.

When will I see results from skin resurfacing?

You may notice an improvement almost right away, but it generally takes some time for your body to generate the healthy new skin. You'll notice a steady improvement in the coming months, and the improvement may continue for up to a year.
